Keep on Reading to Your Kids - Family Literacy Week is Here!

Want your children to learn to read? The greatest predictor of successful literacy is being read to as a young child. Many people think it's a waste of time to read to your baby or toddler, as they often just want to eat, throw, chew, or pull the book you are reading to them. But actually every time you read to them they are absorbing the idea of reading, as well as the sounds and rhythms of the language. You are providing them with ideas and concepts, new vocabulary, and an understanding of their world. And because reading to a child is a cozy, loving intimate experience children develop a positive and familiar relationship with reading. Our local Nelson library is putting on a number of events for Family Literacy Week. Check out the schedule here. For those of you in other communities, your local library is sure to have Family Literacy events this week as well.
